Tips for a trip to Machu Picchu
One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and an amazing example of Inca civilisation, Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that you simply have to visit during your lifetime.
Located in Peru, Machu Picchu is both remarkable to look at and offers incredible views, and we have put together some tips to help you if you are hoping to visit this unique place.
Prepare for all weathers
Although Peru’s rainy season is November to early April, you could be caught in a shower no matter what time of year your travel, so always be prepared with a light raincoat. Equally, due to the altitude of the destination you will find that the sun is very strong, so take a hat and sun cream too.
It is also advisable to wear trousers and long sleeves to protect you from possible insect bites, and closed-toe shoes that are comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
What to take to Machu Picchu
Although eating within the site is forbidden, take some snacks with you for before and after your adventure as there is only one refreshment shop. You will also need water, especially if you plan on doing one of the more difficult hikes, or if the weather is very hot.
Don’t forget your passport as you will need this to gain entry too, you’ll even get a special Machu Picchu stamp to show that you have been!
Before you go in
Decide whether you want to hire a guide or to explore by yourself, and remember that you must pay extra to use some of the routes. Most tours take around two hours, or you can use the map that you will be given to you when you arrive.
There is a toilet before you enter the site but none within it, and it can take 30 minutes to walk back to so keep this in mind.
We hope that these tips for a trip to Machu Picchu help you to plan your adventure in Peru, and suggest that you order some free travel brochures to help you too!
