Tips for taking your pet on holiday

As part of the family while you're at home, pets can often be left out when it comes to booking a holiday as taking them may not feel like a practical option. However, taking your pet on holiday doesn't need to be stressful, and having them there is sure to make your break extra special. Here, we share our tips on how to achieve this.

Research pet friendly accommodation

You may be surprised to learn that there are lots of pet friendly options available when it comes to choosing your holiday accommodation. Even if hotels don't allow pets to stay throughout the whole building, you'll quite often find that there are specific rooms which enable your pet to stay too. In order to avoid disappointment, researching some pet friendly accommodation before you decide on a specific place is advisable. This means that you'll know your options before you set your heart on somewhere.

Pack wisely

It's unlikely that you'll be choosing to take your pet to anywhere too far-flung, especially with mainland Europe being so easily accessible to pets via ferry, so you can be confident that you'll be able to get all you need for your pet when you reach your destination. However, you might like to take your pet's bed or blanket to help them to settle into their holiday home, and a few of their favourite toys are sure to make them feel more at ease too.  You'll be able to pick up food and treats when you arrive, so won't need to worry about finding space for these in your bags.

Prepare them for the journey

Even if your pet is quite used to travelling, you might want to prepare them a little bit before your holiday, especially if they'll be in the car or on the ferry for a substantial length of time. You can do this by simply taking longer journeys with them in the lead up to your break, and stopping where possible to let them stretch their legs when necessary. As with the holiday accommodation, you might want to make space for your pet's bedding in the car to ensure that they feel as comfortable as possible.
