How to Book a South African Safari on a Budget

Going on a South African safari is on many people’s holiday wish list, and a popular honeymoon option, but these once in a lifetime trips are known for their high-end price tags. However, there are some ways in which you can organise your safari on a budget, and ensure that your dream holiday doesn’t break the bank.

Choose a safari park close to a major airport

The problem with getting to remote South African safari parks from the UK is that internal flights when you reach South Africa are expensive. So, if you’re travelling on a budget it’s a much better option to book your flights into a major airport with a low cost airline, and then hire a car which is far more cost effective. There are plenty of parks within a reasonable driving distance of some of the country’s international airports.

Select your accommodation wisely

Shopping around for accommodation means that you are likely to find better value than if you just opt for one of the first things you see. For example, although privately owned accommodation may seem like the perfect option, this is a lot more expensive than accommodation offered through larger companies. You can also find lower prices if you choose to stay outside of the parks and simply drive in when it’s time to go on safari – or perhaps try a combination of the two for the complete experience.

Travel out of season

As with many holidays, travelling out of season can save you money. However, in South Africa this is between May and September, so you might find that this fits in with your holiday plans well. In the north of the country, these months cover a period of dry winter, so you’ll actually find it easier to spot animals as they’re likely to be gathered around watering holes rather than hiding in long grass.
