Three things to do in Beijing
As China’s capital city, it is unsurprising that Beijing offers plenty for tourists to see and do, especially for those interested in China’s impressive history and fascinating culture. Here, we share three things to do in Beijing that will give you a great insight into both the city, and China itself.
Visit Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square is very important to the Chinese population, and somewhere that many who live within the country aim to see during their lifetime. This is where the modern day Republic of China was founded, and is home to a whole number of significant landmarks. The square’s name means ‘The Gateway of Heavenly Peace’, and one of the best times to visit is before sunrise so that you can see the daily raising of the flag ceremony. The square is open between 5am and 10pm, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to visit during your holiday.
See the Forbidden City
Once forbidden but now open to both locals and tourists alike, the Forbidden City used to be the official residence of the emperor and was at the centre of China’s politics. Now, you can spend hours wandering around the 180 acres, admiring up to 8000 different rooms, and marvelling at giant courtyards. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like living here!
Just north of the Forbidden City is Jingshan Park, which used to be part of the estate but is now open to the public. Here, you’ll find Jingshan Hill which you can climb for amazing views across Beijing.
Climb the Great Wall
One thing that most people want to do when they visit China is to climb the Great Wall, and you can do this during your holiday in Beijing. There are a number of sections of the wall that you can choose to visit, and some are more authentic than others. Hiking along the wall is a popular activity, and you can even choose to camp there too!
