Three reasons to visit Crete

Greece’s largest island, Crete is a very popular holiday destination due to its lovely weather, pretty scenery, and wonderful hospitality. Here, we share some additional reasons to visit Crete during your next trip.

Old towns and charming villages

One thing we would suggest for a holiday in Crete is a hire car, as there are loads of wonderful old towns and charming villages to discover. Chania and Rethymno are two of the most popular towns, and you can spend hours wandering through their narrow streets, stopping off for delicious Greek treats in lovely little cafés and traditional tavernas. For a taste of Cretan culture, head into the mountains where you’ll discover plenty of little villages that are full of character, and can feel like you’ve stepped back into the island’s past.

Beautiful beaches

The island of Crete has a beautiful coastline stretching all the way around it, making it the perfect holiday destination for those hoping to lounge in the sun. Many of the beaches are sandy, and the longest sandy beaches can be found in Rethymno. If you are staying near Chania, you might like to visit the beautiful beaches of Balos and Elafonissi, whereas those staying around Heraklion will love spending time on Agia Pelagia and Amnissos beaches. For something a bit different, take a trip to Matala beach which was popular with hippies in the 60s and 70s.

Outdoor activities

You’ll never get bored during a holiday in Crete, as there are so many fun activities to try! Discover the island by trekking along some of its many routes, hiking in the mountains, or cycling around on two wheels. Take to the sea in a kayak or on a sailing boat, give windsurfing a try, or simply dive under the waves. You can even go off-roading with a guide who will show you all of the amazing nature that Crete is home to – the choice is yours!
