How to organise your holiday money

Travel money can cause all kinds of stress when preparing to go on holiday. From trying to decide how much to take to whether you need cash or just a card, organising travel money can cause a bit of a pre-holiday headache. Here, we share our tips on how to achieve this in the most stress-free way possible.

Take at least two cards

There’s always the worry that a particular bank card isn’t going to work once you’re in a different country. Although many debit cards can be used abroad with no problems, if you only take one and there is an issue, it’s got the potential to ruin your break. For this reason, we suggest taking at least two cards with you, preferably a debit and a credit card, so you have a back-up if things don’t go according to plan. If you don’t have a credit card, taking two debit cards linked to different accounts can also be handy.

Tell your bank where you’re going

In addition to the above, it is always worth letting your bank know that you’ll be using your card in a different country. This way they won’t suspect anything suspicious which means that you won’t risk having your card blocked. Calling them to get it unblocked while away can cause a bit of hassle, so better to be safe than sorry before you go.

Take some cash

Even though a card or two will see you through most situations, taking some cash in the local currency is a good idea, even if only for emergencies. We suggest splitting your cash up and leaving some in your accommodation (if you’re happy to do so), having some in your bag, and some in a pocket. This way, if the worst happens and you lose some of it, you’ll have two extra supplies to fall back on. Depending on where you’re going, you may also find that sterling can be used should you find yourself in difficulty.
