How to prepare for a walking holiday
Holidays offer the perfect chance to relax and unwind, but spending some time in the great outdoors can help to revive and rejuvenate you too. There are loads of reasons why walking holidays are so popular, and here are some of the ways in which you can prepare for yours.
Get comfortable walking boots
If you’re going to be walking for miles at a time you really don’t want to be stuck wearing boots that cramp your feet or give you blisters. You may have old faithful walking boots that you’re comfortable walking in, but if you’re opting for a new pair it definitely worth wearing them in before you pack them into your suitcase. This doesn’t mean wearing them around the house for a bit, but going out and putting some miles in to ensure that they’ll last the distance.
Pack light
Should you be going on a walking holiday that requires you to walk with your luggage between hotels, hostels, or campsites, you certainly don’t want to be taking more than you can carry. Light layers are ideal for walking holidays as it can be that you get warm as you wander, regardless of the weather. With this in mind, pack a small selection of clothing items that you can layer, and don’t forget your waterproof jacket.
Plan your route
Although exploring the unexplored can be an exciting part of a holiday, you must always keep in mind that getting lost in the middle of nowhere can be dangerous at times. The best thing to do is to plan your route before you head off so that you have landmarks or footpaths in mind which will help you along the way. Try not to rely on your phone too much, as it’s possible that you could lose signal, run out of battery, or even drop your device into a stream or something similar!
