Things to do in Bodrum
Located in Turkey in its southwest coast, Bodrum is a very popular tourist destination due to its 4 hour flight from London, great weather, and lots to see and do no matter what you are interested in.
Here we share some of the things to do in Bodrum that make this the ideal holiday location for some many people.
Bodrum Castle
Also known as St. Peter Castle, Bodrum Castle was built from 1402 to 1437 by the Knights of Rhodes who used a number of different materials including some from the Mausoleum of Mausolus which has collapsed as the result of an earthquake.
Overlooking the harbour and the marina, the battlements of the castle offer great views for tourists and you can spend time exploring within the castle walls which cover an area of around 30,000 square feet.
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is the tomb of Mausolus which was built by his sister and widow in 350BC, and although there is not much left there to see now it is still a place of interest for those who know the history of the site.
It is suggested that the Mausoleum was originally almost square in shape with a perimeter of 125m and 36 columns, plus it had a four horse marble chariot on the top.
Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology
Boasting 14 sections which are filled with amazing artefacts from under the sea, some of which are over 3500 years old, the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology is based in Bodrum Castle and has around 300,000 visitors every year.
Originally a museum for shipwrecks, the museum is now home to a whole variety of items including a popular collection of glassware, and you are free to take photos of many of the exhibits for your holiday album.
These are just some of the great things to do in Bodrum, so why not pay this fascinating city a visit and plan your trip to Turkey with the help of some of our holiday brochures today?
