The New Seven Wonders of the World
If you are looking for a holiday that takes you somewhere that you can see something truly amazing, why not start with a destination that is home to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World?
In a campaign started in 2000 people voted for what they believed were the wonders of the new world in addition to the historical Ancient Wonders of the World, and seven amazing examples were chosen.
We are looking at these new wonders across two blog posts, starting with these four fantastic sites:
The Great Wall of China
The longest wall in the world, the Great Wall of China is located in Northern China and measures a very impressive 21,196.18 km in length. Around 30% of the wall has now been destroyed due to both erosion and damage by humans, but this doesn’t take away from how majestic it is.
Petra, Jordan
Also known as the ‘Rose City’ Petra in Jordan is a stunning collection of tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, and can be reached by walking through a narrow canyon which then opens up to a view that will take your breath away. There are so many photo opportunities to be had, especially in front of the world-famous ‘Treasury’.
Colosseum, Italy
Located in Rome, the Colosseum is based in the city centre so there is no way that you will miss it when you visit this fascinating destination. The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre ever built and is also the most visited attraction in Italy, plus you can choose to take a guided tour if you like.
Chichen Itza, Mexico
A city made from Mayan ruins, Chichen Itza covers 6 square miles and although much of the city’s original buildings are now not much more than mounds, there are still around 30 that can be seen by tourists, including Kukulkan's Pyramid which is a 75 foot tall stepped pyramid.
Visiting any of these New Seven Wonders of the World would make your holiday one to remember, and don’t forget to check back next week when we look at the remaining three plus one honorary addition!
