Three things to do in Penang
A popular holiday destination in Malaysia, Penang is known for its relaxed atmosphere, ancient buildings, and delicious food. Here, we share some of the things to do in Penang that make it a great place to visit.
See stunning temples
There are a number of temples in Penang, but two that you must visit during your trip are Kek Lok Si and Khoo Kongsi. Kek Lok Si temple is one of Southeast Asia’s largest Buddhist temples, and many Buddhists regard it as being an important pilgrimage site. Two of its most striking features are its Kek Lok Si pagoda, and its 36.5m tall statue of Guanyin.
Khoo Kongsi also boast beautiful architecture, and is also famed for its amazing stone carvings. Originally a clan-house, you can choose to take a tour of this temple, and you might be lucky enough to catch a Chine Opera Show here too – depending on when you visit.
Discover the history of Sir Francis Light
Known as the founder of Penang, there are a couple of places that make reference to Sir Francis Light. Firstly, the striking Fort Cornwallis, which was built to protect Penang from water-based invasions under the direction of Light, and still has a statue of him at its entrance today – alongside some of the fort’s original cannons! For something a little less dramatic, head to Suffolk House, where the founder lived, and take a guided tour of the restored building before enjoying a traditional cream tea.
Explore Little India
To immerse yourself in the Tamil culture that can be found in Penang, visit Little India during your holiday. This small area of the state is not to be missed, as you’re sure to enjoy browsing the stores which are full of colourful saris, perfumes, and incense, as you listen to Bollywood music. Little India is also a great place to try some street food. Popular options includes samosas and Teh Tarik – a type of tea made with condensed milk in a way that gives it a thick foam head.
