Tips for Exploring the Souks in Marrakech
The vibrant city of Marrakech in Morocco is a fantastic place to visit on holiday as it offers a whole range of things to see and do. One of the most popular of which is visiting the souks, a marketplace set around a number of passageways where you can buy everything from spices to slippers.
The souks can feel like a maze due to being narrow in places and covering a wide area, so we have put together some tips for exploring the souks in Marrakech to ensure that you have the best time.
Get a guide
One of the best bits of advice we can offer is to get a local guide who can show you the souks and take you the parts that will interest you the most. It may be that the hotel you are staying in can organise this for you, otherwise you will find people in the marketplace once you arrive.
Guides will also be able to take you to places where different items are being made, such as scarves being dyed or wooden objects being crafted, which makes the experience even more interesting.
Download a map
If you would rather explore the souks yourself we recommend downloading a map that can take you back to the main marketplace should you get lost whilst wandering around. Alternatively, you could use a live map if you have the data on your phone, but check this before you head off.
Be aware that if you ask for directions should you lose your way you may be expected to give a tip, or buy something from a particular stall.
Don’t be afraid to haggle
Although it can feel a bit uncomfortable at first, the people selling goods in the souks expect you to haggle and will give you really high prices to begin with. Go in at a price lower than you would be happy to pay as you will almost definitely have to pay more than your first offer.
We hope that these tips for exploring the souks in Marrakech inspire you to visit them during your time in Morocco, and please do order your free brochures from us today.
