Top things to do in Tokyo
Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, has something for everyone due to its wonderful blend of modern style and traditional features. So, no matter if you want to find out about historic Japan, or enjoy its contemporary attractions, you will find loads of amazing things to do here.
See the city from above
For amazing views across Tokyo, head to the Metropolitan Government Building where you can visit one of the two observatories located on its 45th floor. 202 metres above sea level, these observatories are free to enter, and offer a great photo opportunity.
We suggest going here after dark so you can see the city lit up, a sight that is sure to hold a place in your memory forever.
Visit Sensoji Temple
Tokyo’s oldest temple, Sensoji, is located in the city’s historic district of Akakusa, a great place to head if you want to see the traditional side of Tokyo. Built in the 7th century, this temple is made up of two gates, a long street, and its main hall.
First, you will see the Kaminarimon Gate, a large red gate with a giant lantern hanging in its centre, and one of the best photo spots in Tokyo. This leads onto Nakamise Street which is lined with food stall and shops, and the perfect place to try street food and pick up souvenirs. You will then walk through the 2nd gate, Hozoman, before reaching the main hall.
Izakaya Alleys
Immerse yourself into Japanese culture with a visit to the Izakaya Alleys, narrow passageways filled with Izakayas – small, old fashioned bars selling both snacks and drinks. These alleys can be found across the city and are popular with locals who like to head here for after work drinks.
Some of these bars are only large enough to hold a few seats, but they are the best place to enjoy a glass of Sake and some authentic Japanese snacks during your trip.
