Reasons to visit the Colosseum
As one of the most-visited attractions in Rome, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are loads of reasons to visit the Colosseum during your time in this wonderful city.
See the hypogeum
If you’ve ever felt like you’d like to see what happened ‘backstage’ during a gladiator battle, a trip to the Colosseum can help you to achieve this. Although you can’t see the floor of the battle arena anymore, this means that you can see the hypogeum underneath, which is where gladiators would have prepared for battle, and animals would have been kept before fights.
This area was also home to 36 trapdoors which allowed for special effects, and you can pay to take a tour of this fascinating maze if you’d like more than a quick look.
Visit the Eros museum
The upper floor of the Colosseum’s outer wall is home to the Eros museum, a museum that is dedicated to the God of Love. Here, you will find a number of artefacts which were discovered both on the site of the Colosseum and around Rome that celebrate Eros, including statues and busts.
In addition to this, you’ll be able to see both photos and models of the Colosseum throughout the years, and how the building has changed since its creation.
Your ticket includes two additional attractions
When you buy a ticket for the Colosseum, you’ll also be able to see Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. Palatine Hill is one of the most ancient parts of Rome and the most central of the city’s seven hills. Here, you can see traces of Roman palaces and one of Europe’s first botanical gardens, plus you’ll have excellent views over the Roman Forum.
When you reach the Roman Forum, you’ll be able to spend time exploring this very important part of Rome’s religious and public history. Wander among arches, temples, and columns, whilst imagining what it would have been like during Julius Caesar’s time.
These are just three reasons to visit the Colosseum, and you’ll discover plenty more when you book a holiday to this amazing city.
