Things to do on Phillip Island, Australia

Phillip Island is a popular place to visit on a day trip from Melbourne, mostly due to the fact that it’s home to lots of amazing wildlife. Here, we look at some of the things that you can do during a visit to Phillip Island that you’re guaranteed to remember forever.

See the penguin parade

One of the most popular things to do on Phillip Island is to see the sunset penguin parade. This occurs every day when the island’s Little Penguins come back to their sand dunes after a day of fishing, always to a crowd of adoring fans. You can witness this wildlife spectacular from the 180 degree tiered seating area that’s located on Summerland Beach. There’s also a Penguin’s Plus viewing platform with room for 300 viewers which offers great views of the whole parade, and you’ll be treated to ranger commentary if you watch it from here too.

Visit the Nobbies boardwalk

Offering amazing views along the coast, the Nobbies boardwalk is a 1km long walkway which starts at the Nobbies Centre. From the boardwalk, you’ll be able to see Seal Rocks – home to Australian’s largest group of Australian fur seals. There are even a few telescopes which you can use for a small fee to get a closer look. Along the walk, you’ll also discover the sea bird gardens. Full of flowers in spring, these gardens are home to silver gulls, and you may spot some of their chicks if you visit during the warmer months too.

Wildlife coast cruises

Seeing Phillip Island from the water offers a whole new perspective, and there are a number of different options that you can choose from, including seal specific cruises, and those that take place at twilight. Perfect for celebrating events or simply trying to get up close and personal with the great selection of wildlife, these cruises certainly offer a fantastic experience.
