Three Things to see in Southern Iceland
Although many holidays in Iceland start in the country’s capital of Reykjavik, there’s loads of amazing things to see in the south of the country that are worth visiting, either as part of a tour or using a hire car.
Here, we share some of our top picks.
Sólheimajökull
Sólheimajökull is a glacier tongue, and due to its easy-to-reach location it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in Iceland. You’re sure to be amazed by Sólheimajökull’s rugged beauty, which changes over time, and will be able to spots everything from ridges to sinkholes on its surface. You can embark on both glacier hikes and ice climbs with a guide, which are amazing activities for adventurous types, and will see a variety of colours ranging from brilliant white to vibrant blues. Unfortunately, climate change is having an impact on Sólheimajökull, so it’s important to see this wonder before it disappears completely.
Reynisfjara Beach
Although sunbathing in southern Iceland is not on the agenda, you’ll certainly want to see the black sand beach of Reynisfjara. With impressive basalt stacks that house a variety of seabirds, including puffins, and striking jet, black sand, and powerful waves, it’s unlikely that you’ll see anywhere else quite like Reynisfjara Beach. The beach can be found close to Iceland’s southernmost village, Vik, and is a popular spot on many tours of this part of the country.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall
There are a number of stunning waterfalls, but Seljalandsfoss is one of the most famous due to the path which leads around the back of it and enables you to walk under the fall itself. At 65m tall, Seljalandsfoss is truly a remarkable site, and you’ll often see rainbows dancing across it as the sun hits the spray. It’s unsurprising that Seljalandsfoss is one of Iceland’s most photographed features, and it can easily be reached from Reykjavik on a day trip.
