The best places to see elephants

Elephants are the favourite animal of many people due to their friendly nature, impressive size, and the fact that they really are unlike any other creature.

There are many different sanctuaries and parks where you can see these majestic animals, and here we share what we believe are some of the best places to see elephants in the world.

Elephant Nature Park – Thailand

The Elephant Nature Park is located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and is home to around 35 elephants which have been rescued from camps and circuses and are now being well looked after. This is a great place to see elephants in their natural environment, and you will have the opportunity to watch them, walk among them, and possibly wash them too!

When you visit the Elephant Nature Park you may also see some of their other residents, including cats and dogs, and will be able to learn lots about other endangered species in the area.

Addo National Park – South Africa

You will find the Addo National Park in the Sundays River region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, and this park was responsible for saving many local elephants when they were at risk of extinction. In 1931 there were only 11 wild elephants in this area, and there are now over 450 which shows just how successful; they have been.

Addo National Park is also home to lions, leopards, zebras, hyenas, and rhinos among others, and you can see both these species, and the elephants, on a jeep or walking safari, or on horseback.

Periyar National Park, India

Located in Kerala, the Periyar National Park is actually a tiger reserve but has become famous due to its elephant population. One of the best things about this park is the scenery, as you will be treated to views of forests, lakes, and mountains, and a wildlife-watching boat trip on Periyar Lake is a highlight for many!
