Things to do in Guernsey
With stunning scenery, fantastic stories and great food, a trip to Guernsey is full of great things to see and do.
Wander along the south coast
Guernsey’s south coast is absolutely stunning, so a walk along here is the perfect way to see some of the island’s natural beauty. Discover picturesque harbours, coves, and bays which look like they’re part of a painting, and let the sea air blow away the cobwebs.
One of the best views you’ll find is from Pleinmont, where you’ll discover heather covered cliffs and an amazing sea view. From here, you’ll be able to spot the Hanois Lighthouse. Built in 1862, this solar powered lighthouse has a light that reaches 20 miles and flashes every 13 seconds, making it a wonderful sight on night time strolls.
Uncover myths and legends
You may be surprised to learn that the island of Guernsey is full of myth and legend, and it can be fun to spot different mythical landmarks during a holiday here. Keep an eye out for delicate fairy rings, above ground stone burial chambers, and even ghost pigs!
On many homes you will spot a ledge protruding from the chimney, and this is called a witches resting stone. It is thought that if a witch flies over and doesn’t have a stone to sit on they may fall down the chimney and end up living in the house with you! This myth is so widely believed that even modern homes have been built to include a resting stone.
Eat local food
There are a few tasty delicacies that are enjoyed in Guernsey. Two of the most popular treats are gache and gache melee. The former is a bread made with raisins, sultanas, and mixed peel, whereas the latter is for those with a sweet tooth as it contains flour, sugar, suet, milk, and apples.
A Guernsey bean jar is something else that you might like to try. The ultimate comfort food, this meal is a filling cassoulet made with ham hock and haricot beans. Don’t leave without trying local Guernsey goat’s cheese and butter too!
